Witchford Voices is a village community choir based in Witchford, near Ely, in Cambridgeshire. It is run solely by volunteers and has no affiliation with commercial choir ventures. The choir was established in 2009, proved very popular, and grew rapidly to having a membership of around seventy singers.
The choir’s philosophy is based upon singing for the joy of singing: you don’t necessarily have to be trained, or confident, or even very good – all those things can come! Many of our members have lacked confidence upon joining us, but have gone on to perform outstanding solos in the various performances we have staged. We do not hold auditions to join – we just ask for a willingness to have a go, and a love of singing your heart out.
The choir meets regularly at Witchford Village Hall in Bedwell Hey Lane, usually on a Monday evening at 7:30. Rehearsals become more frequent as performances draw closer, and often run over weekends. These weekend rehearsals are the lifeblood of the choir community spirit, and often bring with them heaving tables of sausage rolls, cakes, flapjacks and lots of cups of tea!
The singing is what it is all about though, and we have been privileged to perform at some amazing venues. Churches and halls are regular venues, and nursing homes both at home and abroad. But we have also performed to packed houses in theatres, cathedrals and even once at the ceremony of the Last Post at the Menin Gate – perhaps still our outstanding achievement.
This year, 2016, the choir is undertaking a tour of cathedrals in England and in Dublin – where we will be performing at both St Patrick’s and Christ Church.
Our repertoire is varied and contemporary – and includes works from film and shows, popular music, some more classical and religious (especially in the festive season, of course) and world music, such as African chants! Some pieces are easier than others, some feature solo singers, some use backing tracks, some are a cappella. All that we do is enthused by genuine passion for giving our best performance – and with the joy of singing. We look forward to seeing you at our concerts!
